✈️ Behind Every International Student Is a Family Letting Go

📸 Can you see me in her face? 😊
Yes… that’s me. The little girl who would one day leave home at 15 ✈️ to study abroad.

Years later—quite recently, actually—my mom told me she cried every day for a month after I left. 😢 Working with international students and their families has helped me realize just how hard it must have been for her. ❤️

When we talk about the international student journey, we often focus on logistics: visas 🛂, housing 🏡, orientation 🧭. But behind every student is a family that made an incredibly difficult choice—to let go so their child could grow 🌱.

For international parents, it’s more than just separation. It’s a daily emotional negotiation: Will they eat well? Will someone help them when they’re struggling? Will they still call me when everything feels unfamiliar?

As professionals in international education, we must remember: 💙 Supporting students means supporting their families too. My parents were deeply grateful for the people who cared for me—even though they had never met them."

At orientation, I see the moms holding back tears 😭, the dads pretending not to worry 😬. I try to offer not just policies and programs—but empathy, reassurance, and a sense of community. I remind them: “We’re not just staff. We’re people who care. Your child is not alone here.”

To all the international parents out there: 🌍 You are seen. Your sacrifice matters. We honor it—by caring for your children with the same heart you do. 💖

And to that little girl in the photo: You were braver than you knew. 💫
