š» Music, Routine, and Resilience
I started violin and piano at age 7. I didnāt always enjoy itāsometimes I told my teacher I practiced 10 times when Iād only done 7 š
. But what began as a childhood obligation is now a lifelong hobby that brings me joy and balance.
After moving to the U.S. for college, I joined universityās orchestra. These days, I play with the University of Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra under Professor Rogerās inspiring directionāweekly rehearsals and two concerts each term. Some recent pieces Iāve had the chance to play: Mahlerās Symphony No. 5, Rachmaninoffās Symphonic Dances, Mussorgskyās Pictures at an Exhibition, DvoÅĆ”kās Symphony No. 9.
šµ Why I keep going:
1. Itās built into my routineāI donāt rely on motivation, I rely on the system.
2. It demands full focus. For three hours, itās just musicāno multitasking, no email, but completely present. A true mental reset.
Some weeks, itās hard to show up. But I goāby habit, not willpower. šÆ People sometimes say Iām persistent. But honestly, Iām not sure I am. In Korean, thereās a saying: ģģ¬ģ¼ģ¼ (ę±ŗåæäøę„)āāa resolution lasts only three days.ā Thatās me. But my secret is: just make a new resolution every three days š. If I keep restarting, it adds up to consistency over time.
š” Music gives me a creative outlet that helps me recharge, stay grounded, and ultimately show up betterāin work and life
āWhatās your way to recharge and step away? š
P.S. Sometimes, students sitting next to me during rehearsal ask what year Iām ināstill fun to be asked that, haha.
